Brief Description:

 The G. Harold and Leila Y. Mathers Foundation provides support for basic science that has potential for translational applications. Disciplines such as Immunology, Microbiome, Genomics, Structural Biology, Cellular Physiology and Neuroscience are some examples of research support currently funded by the foundation.

The Mathers Foundation accepts applications on a trimester basis. The Foundation accepts one LOI per year, per PI. Internally, applicants are asked to apply to the cycle that coincides with the time period in which they wish to begin their research. Internal applications will not carry over from cycle to cycle.

Harvard University, as a single institution, is limited to submitting 4 (four) LOIs to each of the Mathers Foundation's trimester application periods.

The G. Harold and Leila Y. Mathers Foundation provides support for basic science that has potential for translational applications.

The Mathers Foundation accepts applications on a trimester basis. Internally, applicants are asked to apply to the cycle that coincides with the time period in which they wish to begin their research. Internal applications will not carry over from cycle to cycle. Harvard University, as a single institution, is limited to submitting 4, (four), LOIs to each Mathers Foundation application periods. Proposals submitted to the Foundation that have been declined are not eligible for re-submission.

The Foundation primarily supports Basic Science, Ideally with the potential for translational applications. Disciplines include:
  •     Immunology
  •     Microbiome
  •     Genomics
  •     Structural Biology
  •     Cellular Physiology
  •     Neuroscience  

Areas not considered for support include:

  •     Medical imaging technology or related projects and/or electrical engineering technology development
  •     COVID-19 related research
  •     Plant biology research
  •     Oceanography
  •     Space exploration
  •     Global warming
  •     Clinical trials/drug discovery/pre-clinical drug discovery
Grants are not intended for the purchase of capital equipment for a lab
Indirect costs may not exceed 10%


Application Information:

Applicants will be asked to submit the following (this information will be repeated on each applicant's electronic dashboard):
  •     Proposal title
  •     Estimated total funding (additional guidance on funding is provided within the application)
  •     Project period (must be three years)
  •     Identification of Co-PI(s), and associated CV(s), Collaborators, or individuals to include in internal communication, as applicable
  •     A short summary of the proposed research project, including a preliminary set of aims and a discussion of previous or related work. 2 pages, max. Graphics and/or references are not included in the page limit
  •     A preliminary budget estimate. Please include an estimate of the total cost, as well as estimates for areas identified as crucial to the proposal (examples include, but are not limited to, Personnel, Travel, Supplies, Space, Other)
  •     PI CV- please be sure to include a history of previously published research studies

This competition is enabled for Proxy applicants. Before beginning an application, Proxies will be asked to locate their Principal Investigator in HUFP. If your PI is not registered in HUFP, please ask them to create their profile using their HarvardKey. Proxies should never “add user” in HUFP.
