The Ono Pharma Foundation's 2022 Breakthrough Science Initiative Awards Program, "Ono Initiative", looks to accelerate research-driven open innovation in the field of Chemical Biology by supporting high-risk and high-reward science research with the potential to impact therapeutic approaches to disease and pain management.

Harvard University, as a single institution**, may nominate two proposals for consideration. The Office of the Vice Provost for Research is facilitating an internal application and review process for eligible applicants.

** For this opportunity Ono Pharmaceutical will accept separate nominations from The Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard, and Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. Applicants from these institutions should not apply through the OVPR facilitated process.**

The Ono Pharma foundation does not specify a specific research area in Chemical Biology. The field is left deliberately broad so as not to disqualify potentially innovative and groundbreaking proposals.
 
Proposals may be up to three (3) years in length. Funding is $300,000./ year. The Ono Pharma Foundation will provide up to an additional 15% ($45,000.) per year of funding for indirect costs.

Applicants are asked to submit the following (this information will appear again on each applicant's individual electronic application dashboard)
  • Proposal Title
  • Project Period (up to three years)
  • A vision of the proposed research. No more than approximately One & one half pages. Figures may be included, if needed.
  • PI-CV. NIH Biosketch format. Five pages max. Please describe up to five of your most significant contributions to science, and include the historical background that framed your research. You may outline the central findings of prior work and the influence of those findings within your field.Please ensure that all grants or awards, current or pending, are disclosed
  • Co-PI CV, if applicable. NIH Biosketch format. Please ensure that all grants or awards, current or pending, are disclosed

Eligibility Criteria:

  • The PI must have a MD and/or Ph.D. degree
  • Ono prohibits re-nomination of previous applicants. The nominee must be new to the Ono Initiative
  • The PI may not be more than 15 years out from their first independent academic position (on, or after, 2/17/2007)
  • The PI may not already be engaged in other sponsored research with Ono Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd. and/or grant program with Ono Pharma Foundation
  • The PI may not apply for funding to amplify current work. However, PIs may research a new idea based on a prior finding of the PI
