The American Diabetes Association Pathway to Stop Diabetes opportunity seeks exceptional nominees from a broad range of disciplines, including medicine, biology, chemistry, engineering, mathematics and physics.

The ADA Pathway opportunity accepts applications along one of three different tracks: Initiator, Accelerator, or Visionary. All tracks are open to individuals who hold an MD, Ph.D., DMD, DO, PharmD, DVM or equivalent.

Initiator (INI)
Award Term: Up to 7 years
Applicant: Postdoctoral Fellow with no more than seven years of research training following terminal doctoral degree. Applicants cannot currently hold an NIH
Maximum Funding: $100,000/year in Phase I, $325,000/year in Phase II
Support: Project Support & PI Salary
Indirect Support: Up to 10% of directs in Phase I, 30% of directs in Phase II
Citizenship: Authorized to work in the U.S. or U.S. possessions
ADA Deadline: July 1, 2016 for January 1, 2017 funding

Accelerator (ACE)
Award Term: Up to 5 years
Applicant: Early Career Faculty. Applicants must hold faculty positions and have demonstrated independent productivity in diabetes research. Applicants may currently hold independent NIH funding (K, U or R awards, including an initial R01/U01) but not have applied for, or received, an R)1/U01 renewal or a second R01/U01 award
Maximum Funding: $325,000/year
Support: Project support and PI salary
Indirect Support: Up to 30% of directs
Citizenship: Authorized to work in U.S. or U.S. possessions
ADA Deadline: July 1, 2016 for January 1, 2017 funding
Note:Accelerator applicants may hold independent NIH funding (K or R award, including an initial NIH R01) but must not have applied for, or received, an NIH R01 renewal or a second R01 award

Visionary(VSN)
Award Term: Up to 5 years
Applicant: Established Investigators- New to Diabetes Research. Applicants should have a strong record of outstanding productivity in fields outside of diabetes research.
Maximum Funding: $325,000/year in Phase I, $325,000/ year in Phase II
Support: Project Support &PI Salary
Indirect Support: Up to 30% of directs
Citizenship: Authorized to work in the U.S. or U.S. possessions
ADA Deadline: July 1, 2016 for January 1, 2017 funding




Application Information:

Interested applicants will be asked to identify which award track (Initiator, Accelerator or Visionary) they are applying to. Additionally, applicants will be asked to submit (this information will appear again on the applicant's dashboard):
  • A two (2) page proposal outlining the proposed research. Associated graphics may be placed on consecutive blank pages
  • A current CV (Please include funding history; past, present and pending)
  • A budget narrative
  • For Initiator and Accelerator applicants: A letter from a Department Chair or Center Director assessing the applicant's scientific abilities and the potential of the research proposed
