The ADA Pathway opportunity accepts applications along one of three different tracks: Initiator, Accelerator, or Visionary. All tracks are open to individuals who hold an MD, Ph.D., DMD, DO, PharmD, DVM or equivalent.
Initiator
Initiator awards are designed to support early career researchers. These awards provide salary and project support for applicants during late stages of mentored training and transition through establishment as independent research faculty.
Initiator awards are available to individuals who:
  • Are currently in research training positions (post-doctoral fellow, research fellowship)
  • Have no more than seven years of mentored research training experience after their terminal doctoral degree
Initiator Awards are broken into two phases. Funding for phase 2 is contingent upon work done in phase 1. Please refer to the Initiator profile on the ADA website for funding details of each phase.
Accelerator
Accelerator awards are intended to provide flexible, long term salary and research support to early career researchers who are proposing innovative and ambitious diabetes related research programs.
Accelerator awards are available to individuals who:
  • Hold independent faculty positions
  • Are in the process of establishing independent diabetes research programs
Note:Accelerator applicants may hold independent NIH funding (K or R award, including an initial NIH R01) but must not have applied for, or received, an NIH R01 renewal or a second R01 award
Please refer to the Accelerator profile on the ADA website for Accelerator funding details.
Visionary
Visionary Awards are designed to support established, experienced investigators with
strong records of outstanding productivity in fields outside of diabetes who are interested in applying
their considerable skills and expertise to diabetes research. These awards are intended to support particularly innovative and transformational ideas that have the potential to have an exceptional impact in diabetes.
Visionary Awards are available to individuals who:
  • Currently hold established faculty positions
  • Have not previously received national grant support (NIH, HIDDK, ADA, JDRF, etc) as either a PI or Co-PI, in diabetes or diabetes related research.
Please refer to the Visionary Profile on the ADA website for further details about the two funding phases of this opportunity.
