Brief Description:

The inaugural Innovators in Science Award recognizes a promising Early Career Scientist and an outstanding Senior Scientist's contributions to science in the therapeutic area of Neuroscience.

Harvard University, as a single institution, is limited to putting forward one nominee in each category. Interested applicants who hold a primary appointment at a hospital or institution affiliated with Harvard are asked to follow up with the appropriate research administration office at those institutions.

The Office of the Vice Provost for Research is facilitating the internal application and review process for applicants who hold a primary affiliation on the Harvard campus.

Application Information:

Applicants interested in applying to the 2017 Innovators in Science Award are asked, in addition to the application information listed below, to share their interest with the Research Administration office at the school where they hold a primary appointment. A list of contacts by school is available here

Applicants are asked to submit the following (this information will appear again within the electronic application)
  • Nominee's Rational for Nomination (200 words, max.)
  • CV, limited to four (4) pages (a sponsor created CV template that applicants should use is available here, and appears as a downloadable file within the internal electronic application)
  • Research Summary, 1,000 words max.
  • Future Research Plan, 500 words max.Only those applying to the Early Career Scientist category should complete this section of the application
  • Full text publications and/or patents representing the nominee's work, up to four (4) examples in total
  • Two letters of support, unseen by the applicant



Eligibility Criteria:

Please note:
Individuals in receipt of current or prior research support from Takeda Pharmaceutical Company Limited, or its affiliates, are not eligible for nomination. Further information is available here and here

Early-Career Scientist
The nominee must:
  • Have been engaged in active research for a length of time of 10 years or less since gaining their doctorate degree or equivalent
  • Hold a doctorate degree (PhD, DPhil, MD, DDS, DVM, etc.)
  • Currently hold a junior level Post-doctoral or Faculty position at Harvard University
  • Have made impactful research contributions and show exceptional promise for significant future achievement in the field of Neuroscience
Senior Scientist
The nominee must:
  • Have been engaged in active research for a length of time of 15 years or longer since gaining their doctorate degree or equivalent.
  • Hold a doctorate degree (PhD, DPhil, MD, DDS, DVM, etc.).
  • Currently hold a senior level Faculty position at Harvard University
  • Have made multiple, extensive, and impactful research contributions to advance the field of Neuroscience



Review Criteria:

Nominees and their work as independent investigators will be evaluated according to the following criteria:
Early-Career Scientist
  • Quality: The extent to which the work is reliable, valid, credible, and scientifically rigorous.
  • Impact: The extent to which the work represents a significant contribution in basic, translational or clinical research that has impacted, or has strong potential to impact, human health through the diagnosis, treatment or prevention of disease.
  • Novelty: The extent to which the work challenges existing paradigms, employs innovative new methodologies or concepts, and/or pursues an original question.
  • Promise: The extent to which the nominee has made innovative research contributions and shows exceptional promise for significant future achievement in the Award field.

Senior Scientist
  • Quality: The extent to which the work is reliable, valid, credible, and scientifically rigorous.
  • Impact: The extent to which the work represents a significant contribution in basic, translational or clinical research that has impacted, or has strong potential to impact, human health through the diagnosis, treatment or prevention of disease.
  • Novelty: The extent to which the work challenges existing paradigms, employs new innovative methodologies or concepts, and/or pursues an original question.
  • Promise: The extent to which the nominee has made impactful research contributions, and future prospects for further significant contributions in the Award field.
