Brief Description:

The mission of St. Baldrick’s Foundation is to conquer childhood cancer. The foundation funds research to better understand the causes of pediatric cancers and to advance its prevention, treatment, and cure.

The 2022 Scholar (Career Advancement) Award is aimed at early career faculty looking to grow into a career as an independent pediatric cancer researcher.

Harvard University, as a single institution, is limited to submitting one nomination to this opportunity. The Office of the Vice Provost for Research is facilitating an internal application and review process.

St. Baldrick's Scholar (Career Development) Awards are limited to salary and fringe benefits for the applicant. Funds may not be utilized in any other way (lab equipment, travel, institutional overhead, indirect funding)

Funds may not be used for human embryonic stem cell research.

If awarded, the Scholar must be able to devote no less than 40% effort to the funded project.

Applicants are asked to provide the following

  • Name and contact information
  • Name of proposed faculty sponsor
  • Brief letter signed by the faculty sponsor acknowledging no less than 40% of awardees time will be allocated to awarded research, and sponsor's commitment to provide supervision, facilities, research support to awardee
  •  Area of focus of research project

The following questions appear as essay boxes that the applicant must type in, or cut and paste, their response

  •     Relevance of the proposed research project to the mission of St Baldrick's Foundation (200 words maximum)
  •     Brief rational for the proposed research project (600 words maximum)
  •     Brief timeline of the progression of research(400 words maximum)

Applicants will be asked to upload a current version of their CV that outlines current and pending funding



Eligibility Criteria:

  • Applicants should hold a Ph.D., M.D., or D.O. degree in a field of research specialty by the date the award becomes effective (July 1, 2022)
  • At the time the award begins (7/1/2022), applicants must have held a full time faculty position for no more than seven (7) years (on or after July 1, 2015)
  • Applicants holding or awarded R01s at the time of the LOI are not eligible to apply
  • Applicants cannot hold a NIH-K award at the time that they apply
  • Well established or senior investigators are not eligible to apply

Scholars may receive funding from other sources to support their research. However, no other comparable or higher (monetary value) career development award may be held prior to or at the time the award begins (7/1/2022). Scientific budgetary overlap with other funded projects is not allowed
