Brief Description:

The Searle Scholars program supports research of outstanding individuals who have recently begun their first appointment at the Assistant Professor level as part of a tenure track appointment. Grants are for a three year period for a total of $300,000/ $100,000 each year.

In anticipation of an invitation from the Searle Scholars program to the 2023 opportunity, the Cambridge Campus of Harvard University and the Harvard Chan School of Public Health may be invited to nominate a total of three proposals.

The Office of the Vice Provost for Research is facilitating the internal process by which proposals will be selected.

Applicants from Harvard Medical School must apply through the process facilitated by HMS's Foundation Funds Program.

Applicants to the Searle Scholars Program will be expected to be pursuing independent research careers in:

        Biochemistry
        Cell Biology
        Genetics
        Immunology
        Neuroscience
        Pharmacology


...and related areas in chemistry, medicine, and the biological sciences.

This program does not ordinarily support purely clinical research, but has supported research programs that include both clinical and basic components.


Application Information:

Eligible applicants are asked to submit the following (this information will appear again within the electronic application)

  •   A proposal of not more than two (2) pages, 10 point font minimum, related graphics and/or references may be placed on consecutive blank pages after the written proposal
  •  A current CV, two (2) pages, max
 Please do not use the NIH Biosketch, or any other template format from an external funding source
In determining which information to present in your CV, please consider this specific funding opportunity, and which of your experiences and honors are most applicable and will present the most qualified and compelling profile in the context of this funding source
  •     A letter of recommendation from a Department Chair or Center Director



Eligibility Criteria:

  •  Applicants must be recently appointed Assistant Professors (appointed on, or after, July 1, 2021) in the fields of biochemistry, cell biology, genetics, immunology, neuroscience, pharmacology and related areas in chemistry, medicine and the biological sciences
