The New Innovator in Food & Agriculture Research Award, offered by the Foundation for Food & Agriculture Research, (FFAR), aims to propel the careers of promising early career scientists whose research addresses significant food and agriculture challenges. Harvard University, as a single institution, is limited to submitting one nomination for consideration of this award.
 
In anticipation of the upcoming application cycle, confirmed  by the sponsor, The Office of the Vice Provost for Research has opened an internal application. Description:

The New Innovator in Food & Agriculture Research Award, offers by the Foundation for Food & Agriculture Research, (FFAR), aims to propel the careers of promising early career scientists whose research addresses significant food and agriculture challenges. Harvard University, as a single institution, is limited to submitting one nomination for consideration of this award.

Emphasis is on innovation and creativity; preliminary data are not required, but may be included. It is expected that program investigators will have the ability to pursue highly creative ideas, firmly establish their early lines of research into important food and agriculture scientific areas and, with the stability provided by the award, forgo searching for additional funding during the award period

Funding Information:
  • Matching funds are not required from the applicant, as they are provided by FFAR
  • However, additional matching is always encouraged to broaden the scope of the program
  • Lack of matching funds will not influence the application review process
  • Indirect costs are limited to 10% of the total award (up to $150,000/ year, up to 36 months)
  • Un-recovered indirect cost is not permitted
  • Construction and renovation costs are not allowed
  • Salaries of principal investigators are allowed for time not covered by institutional or other grants funds, and effort should be commensurate with the research proposed



Application Information:

Applicants will be asked to provide the following (this information will appear again on each applicant's electronic dashboard):
  • Project title
  • Planned duration (up to three years)
  • Geographic location where the research will take place
  • Identification of a FFAR Challenge Area (*note that the available options may be updated once the sponsor releases the 2024 RFP)
  • Research Proposal overview (300 word limit)
  • Explain how you are outstanding in your field (max. 300 words)
  • Why should you receive the FFAR New Innovator Award? (max. 300 words)
  • How would Harvard University benefit from a faculty member receiving the New Innovator Award? (max. 300 words)
  • As a FFAR nominee, how is Harvard University currently supporting you, and how might they continue to do so? (max. 300 words)
  • PI CV. Include current, past and pending support
  • Name and email address of Grant Administrator for this proposal



Eligibility Criteria:

Applicants must
  • Be within the first three, (3), years of their first faculty appointment: on, or after, 8/1/2020
  • Within eight, (8), years of receiving their Ph.D. (no later than 8/1/2016)
  • Early Career- please note that the sponsor is unlikely to prioritize applicants who have achieved a significant publication history

This competition is enabled for Proxy applicants. Before beginning an application, Proxies will be asked to locate their Principal Investigator in HUFP. If your PI is not registered in HUFP, please ask them to create their profile using their HarvardKey. Proxies should never “add user” in HUFP.
