Brief Description:

The Simons Investigators program aims to provide a stable base of support for outstanding scientists, enabling them to undertake long-term investigations of the fundamental questions in their fields. The intent of the program is to support these scientists in their most productive years, when they are establishing creative new research directions, providing leadership to the field and effectively mentoring junior scientists.

The Simons Investigators program aims to provide a stable base of support for outstanding scientists, enabling them to undertake long-term investigations of the fundamental questions in their fields. The intent of the program is to support these scientists in their most productive years, when they are establishing creative new research directions, providing leadership to the field and effectively mentoring junior scientists.

An Investigator will receive research support in an amount initially set at $100,000 per year. An additional $10,000 per year will be provided to the Investigator’s department. The Investigator's institution will receive an additional 20 percent per year in indirect costs.


Application Information:

This is a limited submission funding opportunity.  FAS will hold an internal competition to select two nominees in each category (Mathematics, Physics, and Theoretical Computer Science) to be considered in the University-wide competition. FAS applicants must submit an internal pre-proposal online by August 19, 2015 by 12PM by clicking APPLY at the top right corner of this page. 
 
All pre-proposals must contain the following:
  • Nomination letter written by someone other than the nominee, up to two pages in length, explaining the distinctive scientific contributions of the nominee, focusing on scientific accomplishments of the past five years and including discussion of a few important papers; the letter should be signed by the nominator.
  • The nominee’s curriculum vitae, including Ph.D. year, institution, advisor, postdoctoral institutions and advisors, and positions held subsequent to award of doctorate.
  • The nominee’s up-to-date publication list.


Eligibility Criteria:

  • Investigator must be engaged in theoretical research in mathematics, physics or computer science and must have a primary appointment as a faculty member at a United States, Canadian, or United Kingdom institution with a Ph.D. program
  • Investigator must not have previously been a Simons Investigator. 
  • At the time of the appointment start date, an Investigator should be tenured.
