Harvard President Drew Faust established the Presidential Public Service Fellowship program to provide funding to students interested in pursuing public service work during the summer.



Description:

Harvard President Drew Faust established the Presidential Public Service Fellowship program to provide funding to students interested in pursuing public service work during the summer. A limited number of fellowships are awarded on a competitive basis each year to a cohort of undergraduate, graduate, and professional School students participating in a broad range of activities, including government and community service, nongovernmental organization (NGO) and not-for-profit work, and innovative projects that serve the common good. Ordinarily, award amounts do not exceed $5,000 for undergraduates and $8,000 for graduate and professional School students.

The application deadline for summer 2018 is February 1, 2018. Applicants will be notified of award decisions the first week in April 2018.

Application Information:

The 2018-2019 Presidential Public Service Fellowship application includes the following components:
  • Applicant contact information
  • Personal statement
  • Project proposal
  • Résumé
  • Transcript
  • Two recommendations (one of which must be from a Harvard faculty or staff member)
  • Letter of sponsorship from the organization with which the applicant has secured a public service position*
*Please provide this letter as soon as you have received it to help us complete the selection process. The letter must be submitted to receive the fellowship.


Review Criteria:

Selection of Fellows is based on the following criteria:
  • Demonstrated leadership and effectiveness
  • Demonstrated interest in and commitment to public service
  • Relationship of proposed project to student's academic goals and broader undergraduate or graduate experience
  • Relationship of proposed project to student's evolving career interest (preference may be given to students who are interested in pursuing a public service career)
  • Potential impact of proposed job or project


Additional Information, Related Websites, and Proxy Instructions:

  • Fellows are asked to fill out a baseline and post-experience survey that will be used in program assessment.
  • A brief written update and photographs from the project are due to program administrators by July 31, 2018. 
  • Reflection reports of no less than 1,000 words are due to program administrators by September 3, 2018.
  • On their return to Harvard in the fall, fellowship recipients are expected to act as ambassadors for the program and for public service more generally.
