Each DUNS defined campus of Harvard University (Chan, HMS & Cambridge) is limited to submitting one proposal from one of the three award categories. The Office of the Vice Provost for Research is facilitating the internal application process for interested applicants from the Cambridge campus.

Initiator Award

The Initiator award is a two-phased award designed to support the transition of scientists from mentored training to independent research faculty.
Initiator Awards provide two distinct phases of research support.
Phase 1 provides up to two (2) years of support for mentored training at a maximum of $100,000 per year (including 10% indirect costs)
Phase 2 provides up to five years of support for independent research at a maximum of $325,000 per years (including 30% indirect costs)
Maximum combined support for Phase 1 and Phase 2 is $1,625,000
Application Information:
Initiator Applicants will be asked the following:
The "Research Type" being proposed (Basic, Clinical, Transitional)
The "Diabetes Type" focus of their proposal (Type 1&2, Type 1, Type 2, Gestational, Obesity, Pre-Diabetes /Insulin Resistance)
A 250 word Research Abstract
, written in the third person. The abstract will be typed, or pasted, in to the electronic application. The abstract should include a description of the proposed research strategy(ies), including scientific question(s), and approach(es) and specifically highlight the relevance to a cure,prevention, and/ or treatment of diabetes
A current CV, no preferred format. The CV should include any sources of funding- past, present or potential/future
A proposal budget, using the ADA template provided for download within the application
A letter of support from the applicant's Chair or Center Director
Eligibility Criteria:
Eligible applicants must currently be in research training positions (post-doctoral fellow, research fellowship) and have no more than seven (7) years of research training following their terminal doctoral degree.
Applicants cannot concurrently hold an NIHk99/R00 grant
