Description:

The David and Lucile Packard Foundation's Fellowships for Science and Engineering provide support for highly creative researchers in the first three years of their faculty careers. Initial faculty appointments should have begun no earlier than May 31, 2012 or awarded no later than May 31, 2015.  Packard Fellows are passionate scientists and engineers who take a creative approach to their research. Packard Fellowships are directed at eligible candidates in the following disciplines: physics, chemistry, mathematics, biology, astronomy, computer science, earth science, ocean science and all branches of engineering. The Packard Fellowships do not fund clinical research, research associated with the design and construction of large national facilities such as accelerators and space stations, and applied research of direct relevance to national security. Harvard University, as one institution, may nominate two proposals to this prestigious opportunity.

Application Information:

The Office of the Vice Provost for Research will accept internal applications from eligible candidates through the University's online Funding Portal. Please contact the Research Administration or Sponsored Program Department at the school where you hold your primary appointment if you are not familiar with Harvard's online application and submission system.

Applicants will be asked to provide the following (this information will appear again within the application process):
  • A recent CV that includes educational background, honors and awards, current external research support and publications.
  • A two page research statement (limit of 1400 words in 12 point font with 1 inch margins; relevant figures, images or references can be included on a third page) The research statement should describe why the research is important and outline the general goals for the next five years. The statement should also indicate, in general, how funds will be used.
  • A recommendation letter from the applicant's department head, which should describe firsthand knowledge of the nominee's ability to do creative research

Eligibility Criteria:

Those eligible to apply are faculty within the first three years of their initial faculty appointment. The appointment should have begun no earlier than May 31, 2012 or awarded no later than May 31, 2015. Only appointments in the following disciplines will be considered by the Packard Foundation: physics, chemistry, mathematics, biology, astronomy, computer science, earth science, ocean science, and all branches of engineering. The Packard Fellowships do not fund clinical research, research associated with the design and construction of large national facilities such as accelerators and space stations, and applied research of direct relevance to national security.
