The Schmidt Science Fellows Program has a unique interdisciplinary emphasis and aims to expand the horizons of the next generation of leaders and innovators in the natural sciences, engineering, mathematics and computing. The program seeks the most outstanding, intellectually first-rate PhD students. Nominations are now being accepted for the 2019-2020 cohort. 

Harvard University, its schools, and affiliated teaching hospitals are viewed as one institution for this opportunity, and may nominate up to seven (7) applicants.

The Office of the Vice Provost for Research is facilitating the internal application and identification process of seven applicants for nomination.

The program seeks the most outstanding, intellectually first-rate PhD students. Nominations are now being accepted for the 2019-2020 cohort. 

Harvard University, its schools, and affiliated teaching hospitals are viewed as one institution for this opportunity, and may nominate up to seven (7) applicants.

The Office of the Vice Provost for Research is facilitating the internal application and identification process of seven applicants for nomination. 

Fellows receive a stipend of $100,000 and are supported by the Program to undertake a full time, 11-month or longer postdoctoral study in a world-leading laboratory in a field different from their area of expertise. Fellows also spend five weeks during their fellowship year at four residential meetings around the globe. In these meetings the fellows are introduced to a wide-range of leading thinkers and institutions.


Application Information:

Applicants will be asked the following (this information will be repeated on the applicant's dashboard)

  • A research statement that answers the following two questions (2 pages maximum, 10 point font minimum)       
         What is your proposed plan of study?
         How does the Schmidt Fellowship fit into your future career plans?

  • A current CV (no preferred format)
  • A one to two page letter of support from a Harvard faculty advisor familiar with your work. Examples of who can author this letter include your thesis advisor, or the head of your Dissertation Advisory Committee. The letter should include an assessment of the candidate's fit to the following prompt from the Schmidt Foundation:
Successful Fellows are expected to combine scientific curiosity with extraordinary academic achievement. They should have demonstrated a collaborative spirit and have the ambition to make a lasting impact in science and in society, conducting research and pursuing knowledge that will benefit the world.


Eligibility Criteria:

  • Applicants must have received their Ph.D. by July, 2019.
