Brief Description:

Harvard University may nominate a single candidate to the fall 2018 New Directions Fellowship, offered by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. Fellows pursue systematic training and academic competencies outside their own special fields in order to advance a cross-disciplinary research agenda.

The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation Fellowship allows Fellows to pursue systematic training and academic competencies outside their own special fields in order to advance a cross-disciplinary research agenda. This Fellowship is seen as a long term investment in the scholar's intellectual range and productivity.

Harvard University may nominate a single candidate to the fall 2018 New Directions Fellowship opportunity.
The Office of the Vice Provost for Research is facilitating the internal application process to identify and select a candidate for nomination.


Application Information:

Applicants will be asked to submit the following (this information will appear again on the applicant's electronic dashboard)
  • A proposal of no more than 2,000 words (13,000 characters, with spaces) providing an explanation of the overall significance of the research being undertaken and how the proposed new direction will assist in the development of the field
  • A budget narrative. The narrative should include salary and standard fringe benefits (including yearly increases), projected training costs and project related travel. Lodging may only be included for vital professional meetings and short site visits. No overhead or indirect costs are permitted, and no funding for staging conferences, symposia, seminars, or event related to the project are allowed. The Foundation assumes the needs for equipment or research assistants will be met by the fellow's home institution. Final budgets commonly range from $ 175,000 to $250,000; the maximum is $300,000. The term of the grant should cover a minimum of two years.
  • A CV, no more than five (5) pages in length
  • A letter of recommendation from a department chair or other senior colleague. This letter should address the candidate's preparation and the relationship of the "new direction" to the candidate's research and pedagogy.


Eligibility Criteria:

  • Applicants should have been awarded their doctorate in the humanities or humanistic social sciences between 2006 and 2012
