Brief Description:

The American Diabetes Initiator Award is an opportunity presented in two distinct phases designed to support a postdoctoral fellow in the late stages of their mentored training through their establishment as a independent researcher.

Running concurrently is the American Diabetes Accelerator Award, aimed at early career faculty.

The following application is for Initiator/Postdoctoral applicants. Please be advised that Harvard University may submit only one proposal, Initiator or Accelerator, in consideration of this opportunity.

The Office of the Vice Provost for Research is facilitating an internal application process for eligible candidates who hold a primary appointment at a school located on Harvard's Cambridge Campus and Harvard Medical School (Quad) . For applications received from HMS, application review will take place at the school level.

Applicants who hold a primary appointment at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health should check with the Office of Resource Strategy and Development regarding the application process

Applicants who hold a primary appointment at any Harvard University affiliated institutions or hospitals must apply through their respective institution

The American Diabetes Initiator Award is an opportunity presented in two distinct phases designed to support a postdoctoral fellow in the late stages of their mentored training through their establishment as an independent researcher.

Running concurrently is the American Diabetes Accelerator Award, aimed at early career faculty. The following application description concerns the Initiator Award.

Please be advised that each DUNS defined area of Harvard University may submit only one proposal to the sponsor, Initiator or Accelerator, in consideration of this opportunity.

The Office of the Vice Provost for Research is facilitating an internal application process for eligible candidates who hold a primary appointment at a school located on Harvard's Cambridge Campus, and Harvard Medical School (Quad) . For applications received from HMS application review will take place at the school level.

  • Phase 1 of the Initiator Award will support up to two years at up to $100,000 (including 10% indirect costs) for mentored research training to allow investigators to complete ongoing research, publish results, receive additional training and develop independent research plans.
  • Phase 2 is contingent upon adequate progress in phase 1 and documentation verifying, among other qualifiers, that the awardee has obtained a faculty appointment at an accredited research institution. Support is up to five years at up to $325,000/ year (including 30% indirect costs) for independent research
  • Initiator applicants, if funded, must agree to devote 75% to 100% of their time during phase 1, and 50% to 75% of their time during phase 2, for a total of 75%

Application Information:

Applicants will be asked to answer/provide the following (this information is repeated on each applicant's individual electronic dashboard)

  • Year advanced degree was awarded (MM/YY) (eligibility requires that the degree must have been awarded on, or after, August 1, 2015)
  • Proposal Title
  • Selection of the "Research Type" being proposed
  • Selection of proposal "Diabetes Type" focus
  • Selection of Therapeutic Goal most relevant to the proposed research
  • Scientific Abstract, max 250 words. Typed, or pasted, into the application
The Scientific Abstract must be a technical description of the proposed work that includes a background, hypothesis, supporting rationale, specific aims, research design, and relevance to a cure, prevention and/or treatment of diabetes
The abstract should be written in the third person

  • Move the Needle Explanation, max 150 words. Typed, or pasted, into the application

Applicants must describe how their proposed research has the potential to significantly improve the lives of people at risk of diabetes or living with the disease.


  • Letters of recommendation. If nominated, three letters of recommendation are required as part of the ADA Initiator application. Internal applicants will be asked to share the name, title, and affiliation of the individuals in the following ADA specified positions: Current Mentor, Graduate or Medical Training Advisor, Past or Current Collaborator.
  • Total amount of funding requested
  • Budget Narrative, one page maximum, 11 point font minimum



Eligibility Criteria:

  • Applicants can have no more than seven years of training since their doctoral degree, being conferred on, or after, August 1, 2015.
  • Appointments must be full time.
  • Recipients of Initiator Awards cannot concurrently hold an NIH K99/R00 grant
