Brief Description:

The Cultivating Cultures for Ethical STEM (CCE STEM) program accepts proposals for innovative research projects that both foster and substantially contribute to understanding what it takes to foster ethical STEM research in all of the fields of science and engineering that the NSF supports.

Harvard University, as one institution, may submit one proposal to the 2019 call for applications. The Office of the Vice Provost for Research is facilitating an internal application and selection process for this opportunity.

The Cultivating Cultures for Ethical STEM (CCE STEM) program accepts proposals for innovative research projects that both foster and substantially contribute to understanding what it takes to foster ethical STEM research in all of the fields of science and engineering that the NSF supports.

Harvard University, as one institution, may submit one proposal to the 2019 call for applications. The Office of the Vice Provost for Research is facilitating an internal application and selection process for this opportunity.

Projects can include qualitative and/or quantitative approaches. Proposals should specify plans to deliver findings to appropriate research and educational communities and assist them to implement projects or programs based on the findings.

Proposed research should seek to provide an answer to the following," What constitutes ethical STEM research and practice? Which cultural and institutional contexts promote ethical STEM research and practice and why?"


Application Information:

Applicants are asked to submit the following (this information will appear again on each applicant's electronic dashboard)
  • A response to the question stated by the NSF: "What constitutes ethical STEM research and practice? Which cultural and institutional contexts  promote ethical STEM research and practice and why?" Two (2) pages max., 12 point font. Associated graphics and/or references are not included in the page count.
  • CV of the PI (no preferred format)
  • CV of the Co-PI, if applicable
Within the electronic application applicants will be asked to enter an estimate of the amount of funding requested, the planned project period, and the type of proposal being made: Standard or Institutional Transformation.


Review Criteria:

  • The NSF will not consider proposals focused on ethics for medical students or in medical education.
  • The NSF will consider proposals that address medical informatics, biomedical engineering, systems engineering and social scientific studies in health and medicine.
