Brief Description:
The Paul G. Allen Family Foundation, through the auspices of the Allen Distinguished Investigators Program, is seeking proposals whose focus would provide insights into the basic biological foundations of Alzheimer's Disease, with an emphasis on cellular biology. Harvard University, as one institution, may nominate two interdisciplinary teams for consideration to this opportunity. Per project funding is expected to be between $1M- $1.5M, spanning a 3-year period. The Office of the Vice Provost for Research is facilitating the internal process to select the proposals that go forward to the Paul G. Allen Family Foundation.
Description:
This opportunity seeks revolutionary new ideas to push the field in new directions or even to invent new fields of research, with an emphasis on the cellular biology of Alzheimer's Disease. The opportunity is only open to interdisciplinary teams , applications from individuals will not be accepted. Lines of inquiry include (but are not limited to):
The interplay/relationship between contributors to Alzheimer's pathology. This may include some combination of protein pathologies, mitochondrial dysfunction, lipid biology, immune system, trafficking, vascular biology, etc.
Consequences of transmission and spread of Alzheimer's Disease pathology
Investigation into the APOE-Amyloid-Tau interaction and role in disease progression
Upstream contributors that lead to downstream proteinopathies, oxidative stress, etc.
Investigation into why some cell types more vulnerable/resistant that others; bolstering the protective ability of neurons
Development of new cellular biology methods or techniques that will change or enhance capabilities in Alzheimer's Disease Research
Application Information:
Interested applicants are asked to review the Paul G. Allen Family Foundation RFP and submit the following:
( *Note: The RFP is available through the online Applicant Dashboard. Select the word "Apply" found near the description of this opportunity. The next screen to appear will be the HUID PIN screen. Enter your information (or provide information if this the first time accessing the online funding portal). The screen will then return back to the funding portal where further information may be downloaded and an application may be started.)
A three page (max) project description. Associated graphics and references may be included in consecutive pages, if applicable
A budget proposal using the template provided by the Paul G. Allen Family Foundation. A copy of this template can be found on the Applicant Dashboard (see details in the *Note, above)
CVs of the PI from each division of the interdisciplinary team (i.e.- for each lab please upload the CV of the PI of the lab, if the PI is a single member representing the contribution of a particular discipline, please upload that person's CV)
Multiple Submissions and Proxies
The internal online application for this opportunity has been enabled to accept multiple applications from the same PI in the event that they are a member of more than one interdisciplinary team to submit an application. Additionally, it is possible to delegate an HUID holder to act as a proxy in the completion of an application. Questions about the proxy function should be directed to
Autumn_Bennett@harvard.edu
Eligibility Criteria:
Scientists at any stage of their career may apply
Applications from individual researchers will not be accepted except on behalf of a team
The Paul G. Allen Family Foundation has limited this opportunity to interdisciplinary teams that include researchers in the field of Alzheimer's Disease paired with researchers in other fields (e.g. lipid biology, immunology, cerebro/vascular biology, bioenergetics, biostatistics, biomedical engineers, etc.)
At minimum, one member of the team must have a primary appointment at Harvard University
