Brief Description:

The Pew Scholars Program is designed to support young investigators of outstanding promise in basic and clinical sciences relevant to the advancement of human health. The award is intended to provide assured support, during their earlier years, for junior members of the faculty as they establish their laboratories. Strong proposals will demonstrate particularly innovative approaches.

Strong proposals will demonstrate particularly innovative approaches.


Application Information:

Applications must be submitted online by Monday, April 10, 2017 by 11:59 pm. 

This is a firm deadline, late applications will not be accepted.

Please read the following instructions carefully.  Click on the link at the top-right to apply. Each section must be completed in its entirety for your information to be saved.

Please fill out the online form and attach the following documents as one single PDF.

  1. Summary of the proposed research. (Limit 2 pages and a third page may be used for references) 
  2. Statement of the resources/facilities available for the project as is standard for NIH grants. (Limit 1 page)
  3. Nominating letter signed by your department or division head AND co-signed by a research sponsor/mentor. If your department/division head is your research mentor, then only one signature is required. (Limit 2 pages) 
  4. Up-to-date biosketch in NIH format, including publications and listing of current and pending support. (Limit 5 pages)
Materials must be submitted as one single PDF.

Style requirements:

  • Font size must be 11 points or larger.
  • Type may be no more than six lines per inch.
  • All copies will be printed in black and white, no exceptions.
Applicants must adhere to the above requirements in order for the application to be reviewed by the selection committee. Additional letters or materials will not be reviewed.


Eligibility Criteria:

Applicants must:

  • Candidates must have been awarded a doctorate in biomedical sciences, medicine or a related field.
  • As of Oct. 23, 2017, nominees must hold full-time appointments at the rank of assistant professor. (Appointments such as Research Assistant Professor, Adjunct Assistant Professor, Assistant Professor Research Track, Visiting Professor or Instructor are not eligible.)
  • On July 7, 2017, candidates must have been in such an appointment for less than three years (not appointed before July 7, 2014), whether or not such an appointment was on a tenure track. Time spent in clinical internships, residencies, or in work toward board certification does not count as part of this three-year limit


Review Criteria:

Applications will be reviewed by the HMS Foundation Funds Committee. 

The HMS Foundation Funds Committee advises department heads, mentors, and candidates to be particularly aware of the Committee’s selection criteria when making nominations:

  1. Research proposal
  2. Relevance to award/area of research
  3. Career trajectory
  4. Letter of support
  5. Publications
  6. Current funding

Harvard University is the nominating institution for these awards. Therefore, the HMS Foundation Funds Committee will select HMS’ nominees and subsequently forward their applications to the University Committee on the Biological Sciences (UCBS). Likewise, applications from HSPH and FAS will also be submitted to the UCBS. Final review/ selection of all applications will be conducted by the UCBS.

Additionally, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Brigham & Womens Hospital, Children's Hospital, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, Massachusetts General Hospital and Schepens Eye Research Institute are each invited to submit their own nominations. Faculty at these institutions should NOT apply for the Harvard nomination but should seek the nomination from their hospital. Please contact your research administration representative for details.
